Moana

When Moana became hesitant in returning home, Tala began singing a song in which she explained the positive traits she saw in Moana while giving her words of wisdom. This caused Moana to accept the kind of individual she is by embracing both her love for the sea and her people. It also gave Moana the confidence she needed to finish her quest in stopping Te Kā’s curse.

Moana departs using one of the sailboats found in the cave and departs with Heihei, a dumb rooster who has accidentally stowed away on the sailboat.
Her clothing consists of a coconut fibre skirt, mainly beige with golden sun patterns and a red sash around her waist.
The film is set in ancient Polynesia and tells the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a coastal village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.

Films

Feeling powerful, Tamatoa attacks Maui and imprisons Moana to prevent her from interfering.
As she grows, Moana embraces her responsibilities as the future chief of Motonui.
To avoid similar problems, they pitched three new ideas, and in 2011 started developing the film based on an original idea.
They are attacked by Kakamora, coconut pirates who seek the heart, but Moana and Maui outwit them.
This discovery excited Moana, prompting her to ask her grandmother why they stopped sailing the ocean.
Maui reveals to Moana he became a demigod after his mortal parents abandoned him, the gods took pity on him and granted him powers.

The movie unfolds in a time where ancient Polynesian navigation and traditions are at the forefront, reflecting the importance of the ocean in their culture. This era is filled with myths and legends that influence the lives of the islanders, showcasing a world where the brave venture beyond the reef to explore. While navigating treacherous waters, Moana and Maui face a crew of mischievous coconut pirates known as the Kakamora. This confrontation strengthens their partnership as Maui begins to train Moana in navigation.
When asked why their voyaging stopped, Tala explains that it was Maui’s doing, referring to his crime of stealing Te Fiti’s heart, which filled the seas with monsters and demons. Tala reveals that she was there the day the ocean chose Moana and gave her the heart of Te Fiti, and still has it in her possession. Not knowing how to sail, Moana rushes to her people and asks for their assistance in restoring the heart. She reunites with her parents, with Tui now accepting that going past the reef suits her.
She soon discovers that all the fish have disappeared from the shores of the village, and the coconuts have spoiled. Moana insists on going beyond the reef to catch more, but her father dismisses her request, angered by her wishes. Her mother Sina confesses that her father acts like this because of the loss of his closest friend when they went sailing to unforgiving waters one night in his youth.

Maui, also regaining his powers as a demigod, finally raises Motufetu and helps Moana reconnect the people with the ocean. After returning the Heart of Te Fiti to the Moana mother goddess, saving Motunui and every other island from dying, Moana returns home where she happily reunites with her mother. Later, when Moana becomes chief, she and her mother lead their people in voyaging across the seas where Moana teaches her mother how to tie ropes to the mast of a boat.

Maui

They share a moment of connection, leading Tala to reveal a hidden cave containing their ancestors’ fleet of voyaging canoes, long abandoned in the wake of Maui stealing Te Fiti’s heart. Moana is overjoyed to learn that her ancestors were mighty navigators and voyagers. Tala presents Moana with the very heart of Te Fiti, signifying that the ocean has chosen her as the one destined to restore it. Moana of Motunui is the title character of the 2016 Walt Disney Animation Studios film Moana. Created by directors Ron Clements and John Musker, Moana is voiced by Hawaiian actress and singer Auliʻi Cravalho. Moana returns in the sequel film Moana 2, which premiered in November 2024, again voiced by Cravalho, as well as a live-action remake film, in 2026, in which she will be portrayed by Catherine Laga’aia.
The demigod uses some of his remaining power to shape-shift into a hawk and fly off into the night. The film’s conclusion underscores the importance of personal bravery and self-discovery. Moana, who begins her journey driven by curiosity, ends up becoming a leader and a symbol of her people’s future. The ocean’s refusal to return the heart directly to Te Fiti initially appears as a plot inconsistency, but it can be understood as a reflection of Te Fiti’s fiery, damaged state—she can’t touch water while in her corrupted form.

Life at Disney

Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi, the composers and co-songwriters of the first film, returned to score and write the songs, while Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear provided additional songs. A „meta“ version of the character appears with other Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). When some of the princesses describe to Vanellope von Schweetz how they stare at „important water“ to gain inspiration for their songs, Moana says she stares at the ocean. Later, when Ralph is falling from a tower and needs saving by the princesses, Moana causes water from a fountain to spiral upwards so that Elsa can freeze it into a slide to slow Ralph’s fall, saying „You’re Welcome“ after saving him. After restoring the Heart of Te Fiti and saving Polynesia, including Motunui, from Te Ka’s curse, Moana happily reunited with Pua upon returning to Motunui.

Moana Characters

Despite her suggestion to fish beyond the reef, her father rebuffs the idea, agitated by the risks involved. As Maui escapes on his vessel, he faces off against Te Ka, a monstrous entity of lava and fire that rises from the depths like a vengeful volcano. In their fierce battle, Maui suffers defeat, losing both his hook and the precious heart to the ocean depths.

Using her wayfinding skills, she returns to Te Kā and gets past Te Kā to return the heart. Reaching the top of the mountain, Moana realizes that the island is gone and that Te Kā is actually Te Fiti without her heart. Te Fiti calms down and lets Moana restore her heart which brings everything, including herself, back to normal. Moana is a 2016 animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The franchise consists of two animated films, Moana (2016) and its sequel Moana 2 (2024), as well as a live-action remake adaptation of the 2016 film, scheduled to be released on July 10, 2026.
She also wears the same outfit from the first film, but the top of her red tube top switched to white single strap top and the sun patterns on her skirt switched to a new pattern. It features a white top with a pattern on it, a red skirt with the same pattern with a coconut fiber skirt. After Moana gets struck by lightning, her ancestors revive her as a demigoddess and give her a magical tattoo. Moana tries conquering the reef, but is overpowered by the tides and shipwrecked. That afternoon, Moana’s grandmother Tala shows her a secret cavern of ships and reveals Motunui’s people were voyagers until Maui stole Te Fiti’s heart; the ocean was no longer safe without it.
